Thus, RamГіn's determination to achieve his goal will test the strength and affection of those around him.
"And in the weightlessness of the background
where dreams are fulfilled
two wills come together
to fulfill a wish."
Text of the film script.
In this drama by Alejandro AmenГЎbar and magnificently interpreted by Javier BardГ©m, we are told the true story of RamГіn Sampedro. This sailor and writer, who suffered from quadriplegia since he was 25 years old, claimed his right to die because the conditions in which he found himself did not allow him to lead a full and dignified life. Thanks to his struggle and the impact it had on the media, RamГіn was a pioneer in opening the debate on euthanasia in Spain.
DeathDeath is the central axis of this film, as well as an elemental factor of life. It is the end of life, where existence ends. There is no life without death, and vice versa. So... Why is it so hard for us to think about it? And, above all, why are we so afraid of facing it?
Since we humans are born we do nothing but learn and know. We cannot conceive that our mind stops working, that we stop feeling completely. We are not capable of imagining a total disconnection. For this reason, in the face of death itself, or the desire to anticipate it, two perspectives are usually generated, represented in Mar Adentro by Rosa and Julia.
LifeRosa tries to convince RamГіn to discard the option of euthanasia. According to her, life can still bring her much gratitude, which is still worthwhile.
Rosa's positivist vision is based on resilience, optimism and humor. Thus, many people do not understand that one can wish or allow oneself to die, because they consider that we should adapt to the problems and face them. Despite the negative, we should maintain hope and a positive view of the future, de-dramatizing the situation and, moreover, live fully.
EuthanasiaOn the contrary, Julia, who is a lawyer and also suffers from a neurodegenerative disease, supports his struggle and tries, unsuccessfully, to be allowed to practice euthanasia. Thus, Mar adentro offers this debate to the viewer.
Euthanasia (death with dignity, by literal translation from the ancient Greek) is the voluntary intervention performed to hasten the death of a terminally ill patient in order to save suffering and pain. Currently, euthanasia or assisted suicide is not legal worldwide. For the time being, only in Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Colombia, Canada and some states in the United States and Australia. In addition, Spain has recently begun the process of implementing the law decriminalizing it.
Those who support this practice consider that the person has the capacity to decide if he/she wants to continue with his/her own life. Those who request this intervention are people who are conscious, of sound mind, but who can no longer bear to live in painful conditions or with the incapacity to be autonomous. Therefore, the right to live and die with dignity is protected.
In the debate on euthanasia, moral principles are often raised as to whether the protection of a person's life does not outweigh the need to protect it. But generally, these arguments are raised from a privileged point of view, from those who have a healthy life with quality of life. Is it possible to have the same opinion from the knowledge that your person will be incapacitated during life?
LoveIn the end, love inside is a love story. Love for life, to be able to live it with fullness and freedom, love for others. Thus, curiously, it is Rosa who, as an act of love, helps Ramon to achieve his goal, rethinking all his principles and way of seeing the world.
Therefore, the best way to prepare ourselves for the end of life, if we really prepare ourselves, is to accept death as a natural episode of life. We must not forget that the grim reaper is an intrinsic and inseparable part of our life journey, and that situations can determine the thoughts we have towards him.
Each one of us faces this trance as best we can. It is plausible that we may feel uncertainty and fear, so if we are able to be honest with ourselves and embrace death as part of our essence, all our fears will disappear for the most part.
